Writing About Music

I began writing about music professionally in 1988, as Editor of Publications for Toronto's Canadian Opera Company. Since then I have written articles and program notes for several other musical organizations, including the Cincinnati Opera, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Marquis Classics records. From 1991 to 1994 I was the editor and publisher of a small journal about Canadian contemporary music called SoundNotes. As well, I have contributed many articles on music to Toronto’s Globe and Mail newspaper, and to The New York Times, The Houston Chronicle, American Record Guide, Early Music America, The Strad, BBC Music, Opera, International Piano, Musical Opinion, Opus, Opera Canada, Queen’s Quarterly, Words and Music and The WholeNote.

In addition to my freelance writing, I recently completed a PhD in musicology at the University of Toronto. In 2009, a book derived from my dissertation, entitlted Mendelssohn and Victorian England, was published by Ashgate Press in the UK. To read a short excerpt from my book, click here.

Also in 2009, I was appointed Managing Editor of The WholeNote magazine, Toronto and Southern Ontario's source for news and information about classical, jazz, folk and world musics.

Below are samples of my writing (interviews, articles, reviews, program notes) for various publications and musical organizations.(All works are Copyright Colin Eatock, and may not be used without my permission.)
