Colin Eatock: Choral and Orchestral Music

This is my second CD on the Centrediscs label, and was released in May 2023. Colin Eatock: Choral and Orchestral Music (CMCCD 31023) contains works for chamber orchestra and also chamber choir.
The chamber orchestra recordings were performed by Sinfonia Toronto, under the baton of Nurhan Arman; and the Chamber choir that recorded for this disc was Soundstreams’ Choir 21, David Fallis conducting.
For all works on this disc, the recording and editing engineer was Robert DiVito. All recordings for this CD were made at Humbercrest United Church, in Toronto, in 2021 and 2022.
Works on the CD:
Ashes of Soldiers (2010-2012), arranged for soprano, clarinet and chamber orchestra
The Lord Is Risen! (2021), for choir and trumpet
In the Bleak Mid-Winter (1998), for choir
Cast Off All Doubtful Care (1012), for choir
Three Poems by Amy Lowell (2018), for choir
Three Psalms (2018), for choir

Reviews of Colin Eatock: Choral and Orchestral Music
- There’s an appealing complexity to Eatock’s choral writing. (CBC Radio)
- The final piece on the disc is a three movement Sinfonietta for chamber orchestra. It’s quite short; 15 minutes or so, but I really enjoyed it. The first movement is melodically and rhythmically interesting with lots of energy and some unexpected twists. The, longer, second movement is slow, lyrical and quite mysterious and things wrap up with an enjoyable, boisterous rondo which is colourful and fun. It’s nicely played by Sinfonia Toronto conducted by Nurhan Arman. (Operaramblings blog)
- Whitman’s Ashes of Soldiers is an expansion of a work that also appeared in Eatock’s previous chamber music disc, heard here in a setting for string orchestra and harp with an extended instrumental introduction featuring a beautifully played introspective clarinet solo by Kornel Wolak followed by soprano Lynn Anoush Isnar’s sensitive interpretation of the text.
