The composer writes: The text for Hosanna filio David is derived from the gospels, and is appropriate to Palm Sunday. (The “filio David” is, of course, Jesus.) Musically, it was sung as a Gregorian chant; but has also been set to music by such composers as Franz Schubert and Tomás Luis de Victoria.

Rex Israel: Hosanna in excelsis.
TRANSLATION
Hosanna to the son of David:
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
O King of Israel: Hosanna in the highest.
