Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Strings (2025)
For soprano saxophone and string orchestra; 3 movements; ca. 12 min.
The composer writes: Over the years, I've tried my hand at several "classical" genres, with varying degrees of success – but not the concerto. So in the spirit of leaving no stone unturned, here's my first concerto.
My decision to choose the saxophone as the solo instrument was influenced in no small part by what I believe was a successful use of the instrument in my setting of the "O Magnum Mysterium" text for SATB choir and soprano sax. I like the way the saxophone, with its bright sound, "cuts through" accompanying textures, greatly simplifying issues of texture and balance. Adolphe Sax was on to something, when he invented it, back in the 1840s!
