Three Duets for Two Clarinets (2024)
2 clarinets in B-flat or A; also available for 2 violins. ca. 7 min
The composer writes: I wrote this set of three duets without any specific ideas about exactly which instrument(s) they were best suited for. (I decided I would figure that out later.) A little experimentation revealed that, in the woodwind family, they are well suited to the clarinet. (And in the strings, they work well for violins.)
In the outer movements, the two instruments are tightly conjoined, often moving in parallel thirds or sixths. In the middle movement, the instruments are much more independent in their motion. However, they are conjoined in another way: in effect, “sharing” the notes of a single melodic line.
