It's time to raise the flag. The tenth Toronto Summer Music festival opens tonight, at Koerner Hall. Over the last decade, the annual event has made itself an indispensable item on the classical music calendar – and it’s hard to image there was a time when it was widely believed that a summer chamber music festival in Toronto was an impossibility.
It was Agnes Grossmann who proved this truism wrong. She founded and ran the festival for the first five years, establishing it as an event that was modest in scale yet impressive in quality. Unfortunately, her wish that a fully staged opera production should be the centrepiece of the festival was too grand a goal to sustain.
