¡Viva la Revolución!

Liberty, equality, chamber music.
The Classical Revolution has been happening in Toronto for more than a year now – but it was just last night that I attended my first CR event.

For those not in the loop, Classical Revolution is an initiative to bring chamber-music concerts into bars, cafés, restaurants and art galleries. The name “Classical Revolution” is derived from the Revolution Café in San Francisco, where it all began with informal classical jam nights by professional musicians.

The idea caught on – and it wasn’t long before chapters started sprouting all over North America, and also in Europe. (In Canada, there are CR chapters in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.) Classical Revolution has become a movement.

I don’t want to say too much about the Toronto chapter at this time, as I’m hoping to write on the subject at greater length in the not-too-distant future. But I would like to congratulate Edwin Huizinga, Carol Gimbel and the other organizing musicians for an enjoyable evening of chamber music at mid-Toronto bar called Dave’s on St. Clair.

If you’d like to know more about Classical Revolution, here’s a link to an article by Chloe Veltman form the New York Times. (I also wrote a piece about Classical Revolution for the Houston Chronicle a few months ago, which you’ll find here.)

Wow, it's amazing to hear that the Classical Revolution has been making waves in Toronto for over a year! I can't believe it took me so long to attend one of their events, but I finally did last night, and I was absolutely blown away.

    Eatock Daily

I'm a composer based in Toronto – and this is my classical music blog, Eatock Daily.

When I first started blogging, Eatock Daily was a place to re-post the articles I wrote for Toronto’s Globe and Mail and National Post newspapers, the Houston Chronicle, the Kansas City Star and other publications.

But now I have stepped back from professional music journalism, and I'm spending more time composing.

These days, my blog posts are infrequent, and are mostly concerned with my own music. However, I do still occasionally post comments on musical topics, including works I've discovered, enjoyed, and wish to share with others.
